A simple variant of the Oriental[/i] created by Gary "Gaz" Regan in 2001 during a bartender-training seminar. It featured in his 2001 The Joy of Mixology book.

James Joyce

 45 ml (1½ oz) Irish whiskey
 22.50 ml (¾ oz) triple sec
 22.50 ml (¾ oz) sweet vermouth
 15 ml (½ oz) freshly squeezed lime juice
 Maraschino cherry for garnish

Half-fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

Add all ingredients and shake until well-chilled.

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Garnish with a skewered maraschino cherry.
