The modern drink originates from Sausalito, California, in the early 1970s after an earlier one created in the 1930s in Phoenix, Arizona. The cocktail is named for its appearance when served—with gradations of color resembling a sunrise.
Fill a hurricane glass with ice.
Pour the tequila and orange juice over the ice.
Gently pour the grenadine down the inside of the glass so it sinks to the bottom.
Stir gently to create a sunset effect.
Garnish with the orange segment and cherry.
