Our third cocktail is the Classic Sweet Martini. When we posted the sweet martini originally, we used a opdern version which is a lot heavier on the gin. Today’s closing cocktail is the traditional recipe from the 1880s. It featured in Harry Johnson’s 1888 New and Improved Bartender’s Manual[/i and is a fifty-fifty of Old Tom Gin and sweet vermouth with two dashes of orange bitters.

Tailspin

This is the 500th cocktail we’ve posted since we started the site. I’ve been looking for something special, but got really busy with work and looking after the puppy that I’ve not had time to sort something out, so went with a variant of one of my favourite cocktails, the Bijou, called the Tailspin.

Our first cocktail this evening is the Tailspin, a variant of the Bijou cocktail which almost leans into Negroni territory. It first appeared in the 1936 edition of Mr. Boston’s DeLuxe Official Bartender’s Guide, without the Campari wash (essentially a Bijou under a different name).
