How Long Does……Keep

***

This site is dedicated to cocktails and cocktails sometimes use a lot of ingredients.

Some of those ingredients like fruit juices, coconut creams and milks have a very limited shelf life once opened, usually counted in days.

But what about the alcohols? This can vary a great deal depending on the type of alcohol. Over a few posts we’re going to take a look at how long different alcohols will keep for both unopened and opened.

Ingredient List for the #FridayNightCocktails on the 15th April

***

To help you join in with the upcoming #FridayNightCocktails on the 15th April, we’ve compiled the ingredient list in two formats:

  • Separate ingredient lists for the four cocktails we’ll be making, but without quantities or the cocktail names.
  • Combined the ingredients into an alphabetical list so as to not “give the game away”.

We’ve hidden the two lists behind toggles so you can choose which list you want to use; this is a new method and we’d appreciate feedback on how well you think it works.

There can be quite a few spirits used each time we do a Friday night cocktails, but the same spirits are generally used over and over again. Strong spirits like whiskey, gin, vodka and so on will last months to a year or two once opened (how long will depend on how often the bottle is opened.

Fortified wines such as dry and sweet vermouth, port and Dubonnet will keep for a few weeks before deteriorating. If stored in the fridge, dry vermouth will be good for about four weeks, sweet vermouth and Dubonnet for two months and port for up to three months.

Between The Sheets

4th #cocktail of #FridayNightCocktails on the 8th April: Between The Sheets

***

The fourth cocktail this evening is the Between the Sheets.

The Between the Sheets is a cocktail consisting of white rum (or other light rum), cognac, triple sec, and lemon juice.

The origin of the cocktail is usually credited to Harry MacElhone at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris in the 1930s as a derivative of the sidecar.[3][4] However, competing theories exist that claim the cocktail was created at The Berkeley in approximately 1921, or in French brothels as an apéritif for consumption by the prostitutes.

Sex On The Beach

2nd #cocktail of #FridayNightCocktails on the 8th April: Sex on the Beach

***

The Sex on the Beach is contains vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice and cranberry juice. It is an International Bartenders Association Official Cocktail, although we’ve used half the measures of the official recipe. The Woo Woo we posted last week is a variation of this drink without the orange juice.

Grasshopper

1st #cocktail of #FridayNightCocktails on the 8th April: Grasshopper

***

The Grasshopper is a sweet, mint-flavoured, after-dinner drink, the name of which derives from its green color, which comes from creme de menthe. A bar in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, Tujague’s, claims the drink was invented in 1918 by its owner, Philip Guichet. The drink gained popularity during the 1950s and 1960s throughout the American South and came to my attention in the TV show The Big Bang Theory.

This is one of the few, if not the only, mint cocktails I’ve tried which I actually like.
