The Cocktails Must Flow

Ingredient List for the #FridayNightCocktails on the 22nd April

***

To help you join in with the upcoming #FridayNightCocktails on the 22nd April, we’ve compiled the ingredient list in two formats:

  • Separate ingredient lists for the four cocktails we’ll be making, but without quantities or the cocktail names.
  • Combined the ingredients into an alphabetical list so as to not “give the game away”.

We’ve hidden the two lists behind toggles so you can choose which list you want to use; this is a new method and we’d appreciate feedback on how well you think it works.

A burst of good weather has us thinking of some tall cocktails, but the forecast for the 22nd isn’t so good, so we’ve gone for some more wintry cocktails.

There can be quite a few spirits used each time we do a Friday night cocktails, but the same spirits are generally used over and over again. Strong spirits like whiskey, gin, vodka and so on will last months to a year or two once opened (how long will depend on how often the bottle is opened.

Fortified wines such as dry and sweet vermouth, port and Dubonnet will keep for a few weeks before deteriorating. If stored in the fridge, dry vermouth will be good for about four weeks, sweet vermouth and Dubonnet for two months and port for up to three months.

St George's Flag

St George’s Day, England’s Patron Saints Day, is on the 23rd April (the religious celebration date moves around as, for the Church of England, when St. George’s Day falls between Palm Sunday and the Second Sunday of Easter, the St George’s Day celebration is moved to the Monday after the Second Sunday of Easter).

We’ll be doing a few English cocktails to celebrate the day.

How Long Does Vermouth Keep

***

In this series of posts, we’re going to take a look at how long different spirits keep. In this post, we’re looking at vermouth, of which there are two types.

However, before we get to the types, a little on what vermouth is and how to store it.

Vermouth is basically a form of fortified wine, which means the shelf life, especially when open, is much better than an ordinary wine. That said, you should keep vermouth the same way as you do a wine.

How Long Does……Keep

***

This site is dedicated to cocktails and cocktails sometimes use a lot of ingredients.

Some of those ingredients like fruit juices, coconut creams and milks have a very limited shelf life once opened, usually counted in days.

But what about the alcohols? This can vary a great deal depending on the type of alcohol. Over a few posts we’re going to take a look at how long different alcohols will keep for both unopened and opened.

Between The Sheets

4th #cocktail of #FridayNightCocktails on the 8th April: Between The Sheets

***

The fourth cocktail this evening is the Between the Sheets.

The Between the Sheets is a cocktail consisting of white rum (or other light rum), cognac, triple sec, and lemon juice.

The origin of the cocktail is usually credited to Harry MacElhone at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris in the 1930s as a derivative of the sidecar.[3][4] However, competing theories exist that claim the cocktail was created at The Berkeley in approximately 1921, or in French brothels as an apéritif for consumption by the prostitutes.
